What happens during Log and Transfer?

You aren’t. Not one bit of quality loss. All that is happening is the files are being copied over…COPIED…and audio and video joined and put into a Quicktime wrapper so FCP can work with it better. No conversion is occuring.

Never judge the quality of your image by what you see on the computer display…LEAST of all what you see in the Log and Transfer window. Those are low res playback devices. ONLY judge they quality of your footage on an external HD Broadcast monitor.

No. Even if you used RAYLIGHT to edit the MXF files directly in FCP, when you go to Color, you either render out uncompressed HD, or ProRes.

Thank You shane, that is definitely what I wanted to hear. So I have the 17″ Panasonic HD monitor with waveform that I use when shooting. How do I output to it with HD Component or HD SDI from my MacBook Pro?

Depends on the one you have. If you have a MBP with an ATI graphics card, you can use the matrox MXO…that has HD SDI outs. If you have the NVIDIA one, the MXO won’t work. Not compatible with that card. In that case, your ONLY option would be the AJA I/O HD. That is quite a bit more expensive than the MXO…but it does more.
