What format for Playstation3

Hi Gunleik,
I don’t know much about the PS3, but I read that basically support MPG2 with hight definition and Chroma sampling (422). Those formats are not supported by QT. If you want to do such kind of MPG2 you can not do it with Compressor but I know that Cleaner can do it. But I really don’t know how to play the files that you will get after.

I believe they pay DVD HD no? You can create these in DVDSP.

Sony’s first release was Mpeg-2 only but it currently supports:

Video encoding is Mpeg-2 (primarily menus) H.264 (Ta Daaaa!) and VC-1 (smpte version of windows Media Player 9).

Audio encoding is Dolby Digital AC-3, DTS, and linear PCM (up to 7.1 channels).

BR supports 1920

Hold the press! If the Sony Playstation3 can play back H264 and VC-1, and it can play back regular DVD’s them why in the world couldnt you just burn an h264 to a DVD-ROM disk? I assume there is a way to format the disc so the Playstation can read it. All it has to do is be able to read the disc directory and see it has a file that it supports.

I am reading all the time that the only way to author a Blu-Ray disc is Scenarist, but 99% of the time we only want to play a single clip. Most of us don’t want the complete authoring spec of the Blu-Ray format. There must be a way that a Playstation 3 can playback a disc that has media on it that it recognizes.

I might be off here but it has to be simpler than this. How ’bout someone with a Playstation 3 burns an H264 HD clip to a DVD ROM and stick it in the drive. Or if you are on a PC encode a WMV VC-1 HD clip and try that.

I’ll bet the Playstation reads it and plays it too.

Yes, there’s no big revolution with blue ray, just a different laser and media. Sony’s burners ship with free sw for burning although i’ve heard there are probs with it. There are other burning solutions surfacing too but not for mac yet.

Sony’s Blu-print competes with Scenarist but it appears to be software only. I think Sonic still gives you hardsware encoders at least. What gets me is these are designed around windows XP pro. This reminds me of the 1st pc video editors that needed windows NT. They kept NT alive, while the server world and joe public went on to windows 98 and 2000. NT remained a backbone for editing platforms. Sooner or later SS (sonic and sony) will have to write it for vista and then maybe they’ll realise that is a lot like OS10. Maybe then they will support mac too. Although I guess if you are dropping 50K on authoring sw another 5K for a box and OS to run it is no biggie.

Blue ray will use a new java architecture that allows dropdown/pop-up menus and other as yet unseen features to the dvd world. Small original content producers will have to be content providing files to authoring houses if they want the fancy stuff. We won’t have to wait long I’m sure till software makers catch up and these prices come down. The 1st dvd authoring programs were 120K (Daikon) and now look what we can get for $400.00!
I’m hoping Apple will pull a rabbit out of a hat with dvdsp at NAB.

Who knows, maybe next year the world will be watching Hi Def from holographic chips.
