  • what effect does ” Set Keyframe Distance” have

Posted by Tom Edwards on March 9, 2013 at 4:02 am

i’m delving into encoding and am encoding footage shot at
    1920×1080
    23.976.

    rendering to h.264 — HD 1080p – 23.976
    vbr 32-40 Mbps

i noticed the ” Set Keyframe Distance” setting defaults to 72.
i’ve moved it up to 300 and down to 1 and see no appreciable difference in the rendered piece’s size or quality.

what does the “set keyframe distance” mean and do?

    tks

    Hi Tom,

A keyframe is a whole frame. Every other frame just adds changed pixels from the previous frame..

In motion heavy exports, you will be better off with more frequent keyframes, while you can space them out further in talking heads or screen capture type projects.

Can you elaborate on what would be gained by spacing the key frames farther apart? (That is, for talking head, screen captures, etc.?)

You gain overall quality. Basically, you have fewer “full” frames, which means that you are now allocating that bandwidth to improving the quality of all these in between frames. You will however notice that bigger jump every time a new keyframe is created. The only way to fix that to to increase bitrate.
