  • What drives performance in resolve; CUDA cores ?

Posted by Helge Tjelta on June 8, 2012 at 7:34 pm

Just wondering, where is the juice ?

Is it in the Cuda cores ?

the 640 has 384 CudaCores (CC), the 690 hase 3072 CC (almost ten times), my 570 has 480 CC…

    Memory from 2, 3, 4 GB ?
    Memory bandwith ?
    Textore Fill rate… ?

Where is it ? The Quadro 4000 and FX4800 has low performance on benchmarch, but his score on OpenGL and such…

The FX 4800 has 192 CC, 1.5GB RAM and MemoryBandwith 76,8….
The Q4000 has 256 CC, 2 GB RAM and Memory Bandwith at 89,6
All in all, not good at all, still this is a card smoke and resolve says is on of the ones to use, WHY ?

The GTX 570 has 480CC, 2.5 GB RAM, Memory Bandwith at 152
The new GTX 690 has 3072 CC, 4GB RAM, memory Bandwith at 384…..

These cards has specs that are SO much better that Q4000 and FX4800, still BMD or Autodesk says the old cards are to be used… ???

    Why?

So what actually gives a kick ass GPU system for Resolve ? and also maybe Smoke

The 600 series have lots of cores but aren’t very good at raw CUDA performance. So 680 roughly on par with a 580 even though it has 3x the cores. So it’s not just a matter of the number of cores.

3GB 580 is best if you can get a mac one (macvidcards?) but it can definitely work on windows/hackintosh.

I am very happy with my 470 and dont think the 20% speed gain are worth the hassle with the power.

470/570 are best value for money but you need 2.5GB+ (ideally 3GB+) for any 4K work.

“These cards has specs that are SO much better that Q4000 and FX4800, still BMD or Autodesk says the old cards are to be used… ???”

In Blackmagic’s configuration guide for windows they state –

“The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 3072 MB is the most
powerful and lowest cost GPU card for Resolve. NVIDIA
Quadro and Tesla cards provide less performance to
Resolve but can be used if other software on the same
computer requires Quadro or Tesla cards.”

Lots of good info in the guide for making a “kickass” resolve system. You can download it from BM in the support section.

Hi Mark, I know things are looking different on windows… there are so much more gfx cards to choose from… on mac we have only had a couple…

FX4800, Q4000 and GTX 285 … so from 10.7.4 (or 10.7.3) we have got unofficial support for a lot of more cards, so now we finaly have got som alternatives…
