I read a blog the other day and in it was the mention of a director “who really knew editing,” and it reminded me of a question I’ve always wanted to know the answer to: What does it mean to really know editing?

I ask because I’ve recently been hired by a company to work for a couple months to help them with a series for History, and as a post production assistant I feel this is a good opportunity for me to see the difference between great editors(them) and good editors(me).

I understand editing is more than just pushing buttons and learning the ins and outs of your favorite NLE. And I understand there has to be a story line rather than just a mish-mash of content. So what else should I keep an eye out for as I see these videos (or any other videos that I may assist with later) come together?

Thanks for any advice or input

    Robert,

There’s a cow forum called , “The Art of the edit”. Perhaps this would best be asked there?

An “editor” is many things. Artist. Psychiatrist. Storyteller. Technologist.

The difference between a good editor and a great editor is the degree to which they have mastered all of the above.

    Rob,

I’ve seen your website, and it appears from the work I saw that you have very good skills as both a shooter and editor, and that you seem to know beginnings, middles, and ends. If every scene in every project you ever cut has a good open, a good middle, and a good end, you’ll do just fine.

Meanwhile, keep your eyes on the editors who can intuitively find the meaning and the proper rhythms of scenes, and acts, and entire projects almost instantly. Those are the ones who really get what editing is all about.

Go into you new gig with confidence knowing that you can rely on all of us here to help you out should you encounter any technical challenges.

    Good luck,
    David

What does it mean to “Know Editing?”

It means that when you work with those who know producing and directing, they’ll trust you enough to leave you alone to do what you need to do, and they’ll like the results when they come back. Then it’s just some fine tuning. 😉

When it’s not like that, then nobody knows anything….and you all have to find a way of figuring it out together. ;-P

Cool. Great info, guys. It’s much appreciated.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum, Mark. Some time I’ll post in the other forum as well and see what the guys over there think of this question.

    Thanks again guys.
