I have been battling with this issue for 3 weeks…
I still have 7 days before I have to present this short film.

The project it`s been shot in hdv, edited in hdv, then nested in a sd timeline then compressor finally to dvd sp for output on sd dvd pal.

I have to say that the quality of the dvd it`s fantastic, but there`s one only real BIG PROBLEM with all of this.
When I preview the project before I burn or build and is exactly the same as in the timeline in fcp 5.1.4
Unfortunately the dvd looks as bright as the sun!!! No matter what I do in changing the settings they do not appear in the dvd….
    I asked myself
1- am I so hopeless or
2- my dvd sp just doesn`t work or
3- my burner is toasted.. ha ha
I went over the settings over and over and I DO NOT UNDERSTAND if I`m doing something wrong…. I know you all heard this before …..
    PLEASE HELP!!!
    Rds.

You are saying that when you preview the footage is DVDSP it looks fine, and then after you burn it the picture is bright?

    Hi Jeremy !
Yes pratically this is it……… I burned at least a dozen or should I say a dirty dozen of dvd`s… and while the definition of it looks fantastic the luminosity in it has nothing to do with my settings in the timeline . And in my last attempt I cut down the mids a bit then the whites all the way down to 63% … yep I have some kind boosting to 100% whites kind of hidden effect going on… someone also suggested to trash preferences in compressor and dvd sp … and again same boosting effect.
txs in advance for any suggestion

    That is really odd.

    Two more questions:

Are you sure it’s not your DVD player that is giving you fits?

Do you use DVDSP or Compressor to make M2V’s?

I believe my chep dvd works fine,at least when I`m looking at some hollywood blockbuster! ha ha ha
I use dvd sp only to burn the dvd. Last night though I tried to build and burn but the result didn`t change at all….
I`m very worried now because the more I read in the cow and other sites the more I see issues………. well at least I`m not able to fix it on my own :), and why those settings changed from pal to ntsc. also with an i in the end, i`m more confused by the day……… one month for almost 7 min clip, not bad as ratio!!! he he
I`m sure I`ll never be a threat to a pro! he he
anyhow is 1 am here and I have to go to work early….. I`ll give another o tomorrow .
    Txs for you help Jeremy
    g.nite
    ciao

If the picture looks fine before you burn it, I can’t see how the picture gets messed up from you just burning it which leads me to believe that your DVD player is doing something weird. Try playing the DVD in apple DVD player on your computer. How does it look there? If you don’t use DVDSP to encode, what do you use (You never really said)?

and let me get this straight, you said it took a month to encode a 7 minute clip?

I apologise if my post wasn`t very clear….

    Here`s my workflow
    1-shot with sony z1 1080i pal 50i
    2-captured hdv via fw
3-edited in hdv timeline full res
    4-exported to compressor
5-imported into dvd sp only AC3 file plus mpeg-2
6- also I exported QT movie very fast and accurate
result gr8 dvd no artifacts nice and clean all around
    only to bright
I tried to follow other workflows like:
nest the hdv timeline into a sd timeline did again CC then exported to compressor then the rest as above.
I also did a 8 bit uncompressed , a 10 bit uncompressed “this was a bit hard to render” ,
I managed to produce a sd dvd following all the above variations , though the end result is that brightness is my issue.
In regards the 1 month x 7 min statement I reffered to how long is takin me to get the power mac g5 quad set up to produce a dvd that looks like in the timeline….
I may have to give up … and pay a tech guru to do it for me

What setting did you use in compressor?
