  • what compressor for DVC HD?

I have DVCPRO HD footage shot in 1080i from the HDX 900. I’m using the 1200a, SDI, Kona LHe, FCP 5.0.4

a)What’s realistically better, Kona’s DVC Pro codec or uncompressed? With the HDX900 will the end user really see a difference going uncompressed? I’m working on regional/local spots. No compositing.

    b)Should I use 8 bit or 10 bit?

c)I did a test & captured it with both codecs. Both look about the same on my Ikegami CRT. On the canvas window they look different. DVC PRO looks sharp, uncompressed has moiré, why? My SAN is fast enough, doubt it’s a drive issue.

    d) In the future can I start off DVC Pro & then capture the final sequence at uncompressed? I tried that & weird things started to happen. I ended up exporting an edl into a new project & recapturing uncompressed.

    Thanks in advance!

    forgot this one…

The Kona DVCPRO HD & Kona uncompressed sequence settings have different aspect ratios. 1280×1080 DVC and 1920×1080 UC.

e)Why are they different & more importantly why does the footage look the same in with either setting. Neither looks stretched.
f)Does FCP do some kind of conversion?

DCCProHD is anamorphic (squeezed), uncompressed is full raster. Both display as 1920×1080.

There is no compelling reason for you to capture DVCProHD as uncompressed, its already compressed in the camera, so you’re simply creating a larger file.

    Works for me.
Life was a lot simpler in the Edit* days.
    Thanks David.

But what you will find when you get your head completely around “the new,” is just how powerful you become with FCP, as it puts the power in your hands. Edit* made things easier, but stripped away a good bit of the power in the user’s hands. Of course, there’s a lot to learn in order to harness tha power Donato, but if I can do it, so can you…
