What codec to use if ripping from DVD?
For a promotional video job, I need to rip footage from a DVD, bring it into Final Cut Pro to edit it then output it back to DVD and am wondering what codec to use for ripping the DVD to ensure that I can create a good quality DVD at the end of the process.
I was planning on using Cinematize to rip from the DVD.
The master DVD I was given has 20 videos that range from 2 minutes to 5 minutes in length.
I have about 50GB free on my external HD since quality vs. file size will probably impact the codec choice.Cheers,

It all depends on the graphics you are going to create. If you are creating some spiffy new graphics, then rip the DVD to 8-bit uncompressed so your graphics don’t get hammered (as with DV) before compressing to MPEG2. However, if you’re just doing a re-edit of whats on the DVD, then rip to DV and be done with it. The material on the DVD isn’t really gonna be affected very much one way or the other, its already been heavily compressed and it is what it is so long as you do a decent job recompressing back to MPEG2.

Thanks, David. I’m just doing re-edits then sending it back to DVD so it sounds like ripping it to DV is my best bet.
