Activity Forums VEGAS Pro What can Boris Red do that Vegas and NewBlue can’t?

I thought you had to buy the whole After Effects software and then pay the monthly fee, which is ridiculous. But if the After Effects blogger on the AE section of Creative Cow is to be believed, you merely pay the monthly licensing fee. Which ends up being a lot cheaper than buying a new version of After Effects every year (or even two or three). So, now I’m not so sure. I may just want to do it.

I’m with John in that I own Pr CS6 and AE, but am sitting back and waiting for CC to either be rolled back or modified significantly. Yes, the price is cheaper than buying the standalone products, but that could change. As John mentions, the products like Boris and Red are great for doing titling effects. Pr doesn’t seem to have that kind of animated affects prebuilt, they force you to AE and then to do them you need to work much harder IMHO than in Boris or Red to achieve those affects. Obviously there is a huge aftermarket for prebuilt affects in AE. But you don’t need AE to run those. I won Boris and NB (which came with Sony 11). I do use them occassionally with Premiere projects, rendering out in Vegas what I need to MXF and importing into Pr. (sad but true, I don’t trust Vegas anymore for most of my projects).

Yes, you only pay the monthly subscription free. It is the same as upgrading every year. If you upgrade every other year like I do, it’s twice the price because you are forced to keep paying! (you don’t have a choice to not upgrade)

[Angelo Mike] “I may just want to do it.”

Here is something you need to seriously consider: If you get into a situation where you can’t afford to pay anymore, you no longer have AE! If after that, a customer comes back to you and wants a change made, you have no way to change it because you no longer have AE!! If Adobe raises their price and your business can’t afford it, you no longer have AE!!! Are you getting the picture? You stop paying, your software stops working. Are you ready to commit to that? There is no end. You keep paying FOREVER to keep using the software!!!

I hardly ever use AE anymore now that I have Boris Continuum Compete right in Vegas Pro. I can’t be bothered rendering out to AE when Boris works right on my timeline. It doesn’t make sense for me to pay every month for something I will only use a few times a year. Make sure you are going to use AE all the time because you are going to pay for it every month whether you use it or not and, like I said, if you stop paying all of your projects are useless because AE will no longer work and that is my biggest objection. If Adobe said that once you pay for one or two years that if you want to stop you get to keep the last version you had I would use CC. But the fact that if you stop paying it stops working is a deal-breaker for me. That’s a loosing proposition that only benefits Adobe.

    I see.

If Boris Red works even halfway decently, it will be worth it over the free NewBlue Titler, which is still causing me constant crashes.

I haven’t used the NewBlue Titler but RED is so much more than just a titler. If you only need titles get Boris Graffiti. RED is Graffiti and FX plus FEC and a few more plug-ins all rolled into one. It also hosts AE plug-ins so it’s quite nice to be able to use AE plug-ins right inside of Vegas Pro. RED and NewBlue Titler are totally different products. RED is more like every NewBlue plug-in, FX, Transitions, Titles, all rolled into one. Not a fair comparison really. You should compare NewBlue Tiler to Graffiti.

Does anyone know where I can get basic tutorials for Boris Red 5? I have found some tutorials online (the video ones are best), but the manual (if you can call it that) really doesn’t exist. I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with tech support getting a basic titling tutorial. The guy sounded liken an engineer which I can imagine was a waste of his time especially if you multiply my call many times over with other users.

There is so much that this program is capable of doing, but how? I have no idea what intricate steps to follow to make it do things and I’m sooooo sick of self-taught learning curves.

BTW – NewBlue never worked on my computer with Vegas 11. I would have crash after crash and finally just stopped using it…

[Steve Kemp] “Does anyone know where I can get basic tutorials for Boris Red 5?”

The first place to go is Boris TV where you will find instructional videos for all of the Boris products. Then check out the Boris Webinar Replays. Many of them are on Boris RED and I’ve personally done a three on Boris RED with Vegas Pro:

    1. Professional Titles and VFX in Sony Vegas Pro 11
    2. Custom Effects and Titles with Boris RED 5
    3. Killer Titles in Sony Vegas Pro

These include a mix of Boris RED and Boris Continuum Complete with Vegas Pro.

You can always ask question on the Boris FX Forum here on the Creative COW.

You might want to purchase a training course. The one I used to learn RED is:

Complete Training for RED 4.x and Avid FX

While it was on RED 4, it is 100% compatible with RED 5. Very well done.

    Thanks John:
It looks like Boris no longer carries “Complete Training for RED 4.x and Avid FX”, but I found it on Amazon – slightly more money, but I’m sure it’s worth every penny. I’m looking forward to learning this application!

I think you’ll find it’s worth it. I learned a lot from it.
