  • What camera/sequence settings?

    Hi

I am filming a wedding for a friend as she can’t afford to hire a videographer. I have a Sony V1E and I’m not sure what settings to use on my camera and then on my timeline. From reading thread after thread after thread this is what I think people suggest but I just want to confirm:

    Camera
    1080 Prog Scan on Camera
    Sharpness set to +3
    +6 gain in low light

    Sequence Settings
    HD 1440×1080 16:9
    Field Dominance Upper
    Editing timebase 25
Compressor – I’m getting confused here and still don’t know what to set this too?

Any help would be great, thank you so much
    Michelle

If I’m not wrong this is HDV camera (mini DV tape). I’m not sure why you set up sharpness to +3 or what in your opinion constitutes low light conditions to use +6 gain. In your case progressive scan has to do with the way cmos works. On tape footage will be interlaced anyways. Though in my opinion progressive scan yields smoother picture.
You should not worry about sequence settings – let fcp conform it to your footage. Captured footage will be HDV 1080 50i(60i) depending on your tv standard.

It was a thread I read that says in low light (I’m thinking the party in the evening of the wedding) you can use +6 gain if need be and the picture will be fine. There was a write up on the V1E by a professional guy that said the sharpness was set by default to +7 and that you should take it down to +3 which I have.

So I shall drop the footage onto the timeline then and let FCP do the rest?

My guess is you never used this, (any?) camera before. What worked good for some guy with particular sharpness and gain would not necessarily work the same way for you. If you don’t understand how to use it and in what circumstances simply stick to default mode.
Yes, in fcp capture footage as HDV, drag and drop it time line and conform sequence to clip settings. After you’re done with editing change sequence settings (command 0): change compressor to ProRes and export your movie.
