I’ve got a pile of dual processor G5 computers that are gathering dust because they don’t run FCP any more (though the iPhone 5 probably will).

Trying to think of something useful to do with them.

What are YOU doing with yours?

Sell them on eBay for $500 a pop before Apple comes out with an updated model.

Use them as a SAN controller. 😉

They don’t? FCP 6 no longer works? On NONE of them?

    🙂

Office machines? Older software like older photoshop. Give them to schools…They’d LOVE that. My kids have mine, it’s their internet/homework machine.

Send them to me…I’ll even pay shipping. We’re still using g4’s for editing (aside from my 1 intel mac) and magazine layout, and g3’s for the sales staff. Outdated? yes. Gets the job done….also yes.

Able to find support or use new technology? I wish.

You can run FC 6 in any G5. No FC 7.

I know, I was being sarcastic.

I’ve a client who… and get this… no, no laughing at the back… is making money with hers. It runs 6.06 without a hitch, has crashed so few times I can’t remember the last time I had a problem, and does 95% of the things my 7 system can. So encodes take a little longer, and renders too, but we got around that one by me teaching her how to render, export and encode. Now she does that outside of my billable hours.

So don’t write them off just yet!

Actually from what I’ve read, you can run FCP 7 on G5s, but you need an installer called Pacifier to do it. I’ve read several blogs about doing this without hiccups. ProRes may lack in performance since it’s geared for Intel but from what I’ve heard it works. If you check the code it’s still Universal Binary which means it should still work.
