I have Vegas versions 7 & 9 and DVDA. Up to this time all my work has been done in standard definition because my customers don’t want/need HD. Because of that I know virtually nothing about editing and outputting HD to disc. My brother is getting married and wants me to edit video that his video guy will be shooting in HD. If I don’t have an HD camera how can I get the video onto my computer? My brother really doesn’t care if the final product is in HD, so can I get the video onto my computer in standard def? Can the video guy shoot in standard def? From my questions I’m sure you can see that I’m lost on this one. Any help/direction would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

I have a Sony HVR-Z5U HD camera that can take it in Tape – .m2ts files at a resolution of HDD – 1920×1080 60i or 50i and 1080p (progressive). I imported/captured that tape into the hard disk. Then I do post-production all in HD and I can output in HD or Standard Definition (720x480i) NTSC WIDESCREEN. But you will need the camera to hook it up with a firewire cable in order to capture. If not, the camera person has to give it to you in MT2S DVD disk that he has captured in his computer.

The Video guy can also shoot in standard definition. He has to setup the Video resolution in the camera settings to standard definition. The downside of this is that if, later, by any chance, your brother wants the production in HD disc that will not be possible. So it is better to make the stock video in HD.

Would it work if my brother was to give his videoman a hard drive and ask him to copy all the native HD files onto that?

    Thanks

Yes it will certainly work. Then you may be able to drag/drop those files into the video bars. Worst case, you may have to IMPORT those clips into Vegas 9. Just as a precaution, please ask him the video format he will have in the hard disk – AVCHD/M2TS, MPEG-2 etc.
    Good luck.

NB: I normally shoot stage shows with my Sony HVR-Z5U camera. That can record in a HD tapes (65 mins/tape) cost $12.00 each. Since i am shooting from one spot, I also capture the entire show directly in a laptop’s hard drive using the firewire port of the camera. This way,
I get a complete backup. Another advantage is that, when I change the tape, the hard disk continues capturing non-stop. So there is less chance of any footage.
