  • What am I doing wrong with Transition Keyframing

I am just doing some basic cutting between different images and I have applied some keyframed motion to the images ala Ken Burns, but after adding cross-fading between the images, you can see a few frames of no motion, before the motion begins.

In other words because the transition adds some frames before the place I added a keyframe, you can see the next image sitting still for a few frames, then picking up the motion where I put the keyframe.

I thought FCP automatically adjusted the keyframing for you when you added the transition so that it appears smooth. I’m sure it’s something very basic that I’m missing.

    Thanks

Your keyframes most likely start after the transition begins and before the transition ends.

So the dissolve starts, your image is sitting still, then the first keyframe tells the image to start moving. You need to back that keyframe up so it starts before the dissolve.

You are totally right, that is exactly what is happening.

However, if you can believe it, I have no idea how to move a keyframe. Also, I feel like I’ve seen FCP automate this task, sort of like snapping, so you don’t have to update manually if you add or remove transitions.

    Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I don’t seem to know the auto-snapping of keyframes [am keeping my ears pricked for a possible solution since it gets tiring having to readjust your keyframes whenever you introduce a transition effect].

But instead of manually dragging my keyframes to the updated start and end point [which can be tedious and inaccurate], when I’m in the motion tab, I use ‘Option-I’ and ‘Option-O’ to get to the in and out points of the clip, and insert a keyframe on both ends. They would keep the values of the existing in and out keyframes. Then, I’ll go and delete the old keyframes.
