Posted by Jim Bachalo on September 15, 2011 at 3:20 pmHi
Can anyone tell me if the ‘weld with sparks’ effect

is possible to do natively with AE, or do I need to purchase a plugin ie Particular?

September 15, 2011 at 3:32 pmAE’s “CC Particle World” plugin should give you what you’re looking for. Here are a couple tutorials that should get you started:

September 15, 2011 at 7:44 pmCC partical world should work fine. He the blend mode to add, and duplicate the layer a few times to add intensity.

As the others said, CC Particle World will do this effect well.
That said, Particular is incredibly flexible, and you can use it for all sorts of effects that you might not think of at first. It’s a great buy, and once you have it, you will find all sorts of uses for it. For example, see this recent thread where Marc De Coster is building an animated dandelion with Particular [link].
