  • weird sync issues when exporting

I’ve been having some strange sync problems every once in a while when exporting my QT videos from FCP. It’s not a drift issue, or a sample-rate issue because every time it happens it’s only one clip, usually somewhere in the middle of the sequence. The audio will typically be out of sync anywhere from 10 to 15 frames. The only way I’ve been able to fix it is to go back to the sequence and purposely knock it out of sync in the other direction, so that when it exports it’s lined up again. The biggest hassle with it is that it only happens on the export so by the time it’s all said and done it takes me a couple or a few hours to correct it because of the time it takes to compress.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this, or more importantly how to make it stop happening?

If you have it narrowed down to a single clip, try re-digitizing the clip from your tape/media. We have experienced similar issues and found that the tape had an issue with timecode/sync/etc and had to do a dub of the tape and then re-digitize to correct the issue.

I should’ve given some more details in my original post, I guess.

My footage is from a 5D. It was been transcoded to AIC. Audio was recorded separately on a Zoom H4.

Trash your audio render files and try again.

    Aic? Wow.

thanks for the input, unfortunately, didn’t help.

Trashed the files, re-launched fcp, created a new sequence, copied and pasted the timeline, exported and sync is the same.

And the AIC thing… I know, I know!!! I just recently upgraded to FCP 7 and snow leopard so I’m not full on ProRes… but AIC was the next best option in the past. This is my last AIC project… I promise.

Any other thoughts on the audio?

    That’s a weird one.

What format did you record on the zoom? Is it only the one clip or does it change?

The zoom files are 44.1/16 WAVs, sequence is the same.

I found 4 separate clips in this project that’s about 9 minutes long. It’s only happened one other time on a project that was about 7 minutes. But I’ve done other projects of similar lengths that it HASN’T happened on. And I’ve done about 75 other sequences with the same setup of anywhere and of all sorts of varying lengths, but mostly in the 3-5 minute range. So basically I haven’t been able to figure out any distinct similarities between the two projects that it’s happened on.

I guess I just continue with the work around I’ve figured out and hope it stops happening.

[tash baycroft] “The zoom files are 44.1/16 WAVs, sequence is the same. “

Try converting those to 48k/16bit aifs and replacing. My guess is that you render files are getting screwed up.
