Weird Strobing in HPX500 Viewfinder
Posted by Bill Thomas on December 27, 2007 at 9:41 pmI just got the 500 and noticed a strobing effect in the B/W viewfinder when I pan left or right. It’s noticeable at almost any pan speed. But it doesn’t show up in the color LCD screen or any external monitors.
What could be causing this?? It’s very disconcerting when I’m trying to compose pan shots.
Thanks,
Bill

December 29, 2007 at 12:43 amProgressive or interlaced, and what frame rate? Set the camera to a 60i (30i) format and see if does the same thing.
I haven’t noticed anything unusual with my 500’s viewfinder, but give me your settings and I’ll compare tonight if you like.

January 4, 2008 at 2:20 pmWe just got our HPX500 yesterday and are having the same problem. Tried to change the frame rate, but that didn’t help. Any other suggestions?
Thanks

January 21, 2008 at 2:00 amAre you sure it’s a problem with the camera and not just progressive scan footage?

January 28, 2008 at 6:57 pmANY interlaced monitor(CRT,which the viewfinder is) will show strobing when your camera is in ANY progressive mode. Switch to 60i, and it will be gone. But, you probably want to shoot P. So live with it.
That’s why for spots, etc on broadcast TV, you should shoot in interlace mode. Alot of people still have CRT monitors. I’m talking about video cameras, NOT film cameras.
I have 5 monitors. One is a HD CRT Panasonic monitor, used for color correction. Beats any LCD,etc. But,will show strobing when editing Progressive.
Even in my bedroom CRT TV, I’ll sometimes see terrible strobing on local spots. Yep, they shot P with their video cams. I have shot film. Even cranked to 30fps for TV. Gee, must look like video
This will all be mute in a few years, as CRT’s are phased out.
