When I try panning sound left or right using the audio pan function in FCP 5 I am unable to hear sound come out of the oppositve speaker. Even stranger is the sound has come in mixed even though I recorded seperate channels on my HVR-Z1. I used channel 1 for nat sound, 2 for interviews. I used the HVR1080 50i preset to capture the footage. The individual speakers are working fine because I can hear audio on the seperate channels intended when I pan them appropriately. When trying a pan to swap channels, I can see the change from left-to-right registering in the audio level meter, for some odd reason I just don’t hear it. Any ideas anyone?

i’m guessing that your capture preset was stereo audio … you need to change the clip settings in the log and capture window, in fcp5 its the square button to the left of the level indicators that toggles between stereo and dual mono capture.

for now, you can select all the stero clips in the browser, and chose Modify>Stero Pair (or Option-L) to split the tracks.

    hope it helps

A good point which i have already tried. The issue is the panning effect works, I just can’t hear it once I have performed the switch. For example, sound that I can hear on the right speaker appears in the right channel of the audio meter. If I pan this sound to the left it appears in the left channel of the audio meter. The only thing is no sound whatsoever comes out of the left speaker. Similarly, if i have something on the left i can hear and move it to the right, it doesn’t come out of the right speaker, even though it’s showing as outputting on the right channel on the meter. Weeeeeird, huh?
I’ve quit FCP5, trashed my prefs and reopened, but no joy. And now it’s affecting former projects. At a bit of a loss, and slightly worried…

Tried a variation on your theme. Ctrl-clicked on the sequence, went to Settings and in Audio Options, set it to Dual Mono and put the Down mix at 0dB. Back to normal! Cheers. D.
