I don’t see any distortion. How did you letterbox it? You should just change the project dimensions to the aspect ration you want and let YouTube letterbox it for you.

oh please tell me what the dimensions would be I have been trying to figure out how to letterbox my videos properally for a while 🙁

I use hitfilm cinestyle and turn everything off except letterbox and i reposition with the plugin.

And the distortion is one very thin line that runs at the top of the letter box and at the bottom of the letterbox.

It’s actually very simple math. What cinema aspect ratio do you want to use: 1.85:1? 2.39:1? What is your source footage? 1080 HD?

[James Hark] “source footage is 1080 hd yes. i want 2.35:1 letter box.”

OK, so here is how the math works: 2.35:1 means that the images has a width 2.35 x wider than the height which is 1. Since your image will never be wider than 1920 you need to solve the equation for height by dividing your width by 2.35:

    1920 / 2.35 = 817.02127659574468

That means the height needs to be 817.02 but there’s a problem. Most codecs can only encode dimensions in multiples of 8 and 817 doesn’t divide y 8 evenly (102.1275) but 816 does (816 / 8 = 102).

So you need to set your project width and height to 1920 x 816 with a Pixel Aspect Ratio of 1.0 to get a cinema aspect of 2.35:1. You might want save that as a template for future projects.

Now you can render to 1920 x 1080 and the process of rendering will letterbox your video the right way.

    I don’t use HitFilm so I’m sorry but I can’t help you there. 🙁
