Weird footage problem
Posted by Nick Kirastoulis on May 14, 2008 at 4:27 amWhen i import my video footage into after effects, it gives it a weird kind of motion blurred look even though i didn’t do anything to it. The motion blur setting is also disabled.
here is an image of what is happening:

May 14, 2008 at 2:46 pmit looks like the second image is being composited from the image data from both fields, creating a double image like effect.
you usually only see this if the footage is not being de-interlaced and the footage gets scaled 50%, if it is viewed at 100% you usually see the field. doing what kenneth suggested should help in that case (select the footage in the project window, then choose file>interpret footage>main and set ae to separate fields with proper order).
however, you can also get this if you separate fields, but choose frame blending (frame mix) for the footage in the comp and have frame blending turned on for previews or final renders (it would be the default for final renders).
do you have frame blending turned on for this footage layer? if so, try disabling it and see if the problem goes away.

May 15, 2008 at 4:05 pmin your image sample, the image on the left is grabbed from where (what piece of software… quicktime, nle?)
and the image on the right, is that a grab from the ram preview, or a rendered frame from ae (or do you see it in both)?
If it is in the ram preview, are you importing the exact same file as was seen in the left image, or are you exporting that footage to bring into ae? if you are exporting the footage from an nle, can you view that file in a player (like quicktime) to make sure that file looks like the original media in the nle…? i’m just wondering if the footage is getting changed in some way prior to importing in ae.

May 15, 2008 at 4:25 pmThe left image is a screenshot of windows media player and the right is the same file imported into after effects.

May 15, 2008 at 6:10 pmae shouldn’t be doing this.. can you tell me more about your footage…
what is the framerate, codec and format..? like 29.97, mpeg2 codec, avi format…
also, how is ae interpreting the footage? (select the footage in the project window, then choose file>interpret footage>main…) what are the settings for frame rate, separate fields and pixel aspect ratio…

May 15, 2008 at 8:49 pmThe format is WMV and the frame rate is 29.97. I’m not sure about the codec
AE interprets the lower field first and a pixel apect ration of non square 0.89:1

May 15, 2008 at 10:11 pmwhat’s the frame size of the footage…? 720×480?
and do you see this double image like effect on every frame or just certain frames?
and do you see this on any other media files?
