  • Weird export issues with ProRes HQ sequences & “”Black Video” clips in CC

I’m running into a wierd problem in PPCC, where I am unable to export a sequence (either through the “File/Export” menu, or via AME) if there’s an instance of a “Black Video” or “Color Matte” clip in it. When I try to export the sequence, the export will indefinitely hang at the moment that it hits an instance of a Black Video or Color Matte clip. Neither enabling/disabling the “Max bit depth”, “Max Render Quality”, “Use Previews” etc checkboxes, or changing the Mercury Playback Engine to Software-only resolves this issue.

After much troubleshooting, I think I’ve narrowed down the problem to the fact that I only see this problem if my sequence is set to use “Quicktime” and ProRes (either HQ, LT, SQ or Proxy) as the sequence Preview File Format and Codec, AND I try to export the file using ProRes.

If I change the Export Settings Video Codec to anything besides ProRes, the sequence successfully exports. And strangely enough, if I export using ProRes4444 as the export codec, it also outputs fine. So it seems that only the non-4444 ProRes variants are affected.

So there’s obviously an issue with these “Generators” (apologies for the FCP-speak) when they appear in ProRes based sequences. It’s a pretty major bug, in my book, because one of the most appealing features of CC is the ability to natively export sequences using the new support for ProRes Smart Rendering.

The workaround for this in the meantime is to kick it old-school and use the default “I-Frame Only MPEG” as the sequence Preview File Format. This lets you export out using ProRes, but of course you lose the ability to export to ProRes using Smart Rendering and rendered Previews.

I’ve replicated this bug on both my 2010 Mac Pro at work (running 10.8.2 and 3x NVIDIA GTX570 cards), as well as my crappy old 2010 MacBook Pro running 10.8.4 (NVIDIA GT330M).

This is interesting. I’ll have to test it out on my Mac Pro’s as well.

Did you render the sequence before exporting? Is it possible the renders are corrupt?

Another issue could be that you are using a technically un-supported GPU configuration on your Mac – https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html

Now the CC should be able to utilize your cards but….

Doesn’t matter if I render first, or if I kill all the renders before exporting.

The GPU shouldn’t be playing into this error, since as I mentioned I’ve tried dropping into non-GPU MPE mode, and it doesn’t change the behavior.

    On iMac mid 2011.

I have a short duration (2min) sequence setup for preview files as ProRes HQ, 1280×720, 25p. The clips are all MXF from a Canon XF300. Some of the clips are green screen over a Premiere generated color matte.

When I export this sequence directly from the export window or by queuing to AME I see no problems exporting to any flavour of ProRes.

I went back and inserted some new Premiere generated color mattes and also had no problems during export.

Is there anything I can check for you?

My source media is 1080p23.976 ProResHQ. Try it with ProRes source clips, not MXF. I’ve replicated this behavior on every machine I’ve tried it on.

Ok – I don’t have your source clips or project but if I take a 2min30sec, 1080p23.976 ProResHQ clip into a brand new project, edit it on to a 1080p23.976 ProResHQ sequence, insert a color matte of 5 secs duration in to the middle of the clip I do not have any problems. Tried exporting to all variations of ProRes 422.

I admit my edit is a simple one
