Website
Posted by Darren Clevenger on October 5, 2010 at 9:27 pmI’m editing a spot for a car dealership that was written by an outside agency. They call for us to use screen shots from Cars.com. Can we even do this? I’m assuming we can’t because the site has a copyright, but wanted to be sure before I contacted the agency.
Thanks for any input you may be able to provide.

October 5, 2010 at 10:24 pmI assume that this is a used car dealer. Because new car dealers can get “running footage” of the cars they represent from the manufacturers for their local ads.

October 7, 2010 at 2:59 pmI think a little more explanation is in order. They wanted to show the Cars.com site as an example of how they shop around and beat the competitors’ prices.
I have thought of a followup question. What’s the word on just using the name of a competitor? I’m thinking along the lines of the Progressive Insurance commercials where they show that board with State Farm, Allstate, etc. Could I make a search results page that simply has a list of results like “Cars.com $17,599”?

October 19, 2010 at 5:04 pmjust have em overnight some running footage to ya. Nobody wants stills in a car ad and it’s not like the running footage isn’t already paid for.

October 21, 2010 at 9:15 pmYou can use competitors name; just be sure not to libel them…
It’s all the those pesky details :p
