I specked out a Quad-core 2.5 with 4GB Ram for web encoding. I want to be prepared to give an answer if I get the, “Can we do it cheaper” question.
How much speed would I loose if I went with a Dual core w/ 2 Gb ram?

We post two 60 minute Real hi/lo & WMP hi/lo streams a week with a large backlog of videos to encode. This G5 will probably be used 30-40 hrs a week on encoding & possibly other things. We use Squeeze 4.1.

On my dual 2.7 single core with 4Gb ram, I can do this job in 4 hours. That’s 2 programs a day. Would it take the Dual-core w/ 2Gb Ram 25% longer? 50%? Is the quad with 4Gb ram overkill?

    Thanks!

I’m not sure if Squeeze 4.1 recognizes 4 processors, but programs I have
used such as Maya, After Effects, and Compressor all render about twice
as fast as our dual 2.5.

no joke. it screems. and get as much ram as possible.
