web authoring html / css on a Mac ?
I have a colleague with a (strong) graphic design (print) background, who is looking into learning html / css and getting into web stuff.
All his experience and kit is Apple stuff. Any tips on decent web tools for the Mac – hands on html stuff rather than wysiwyg or Dreamweaver? I know Amaya and Aptana are cross platform, have seen promotional stuff for Rage’s WebDesign, Cssedit Style Master and Coda – but wonder what people might be using / might advise?
Any thoughts on decent online tutorials / learning resources also appreciated.

iWeb is made specifically for beginners.
I would also like to offer a huge shout-out for w3schools.com
They offer a really simple & step by step introduction to basic web technologies. While you dont need it to use a program like iWeb, spending a little time to understand the technology underneath will go a long way towards helping you feel less trapped by the limits of whatever software you use.

On the iWeb side, I had the impression that this was more of a template-driven tool for beginners not planning to go too far into web work, while my colleague’s mid-term aim is to get to a professional level in this to match his pro print work.
I was wondering about tools that might offer standards compliance, access to the underlying code and technologies, and scope for growth?

Also, Fireworks offers a lot of tools just for print designers to make the transition to web.

Fireworks would be a way to start learning about Dreamweaver, but you would need both to do anything significant.

Kind of you to respond again Jameson. But I’m really trying to look past Dreamweaver, with its well known strengths and weaknesses, to see what more code-centric tools people might be using on the Mac, and how they feel about them.
My own current preference is for TopStyle for html / css (and Eclipse for php), though TopStyle is Windows only, and has limited javascript support.
I’ve been tempted by Aptana https://www.aptana.org/ but have yet to install and test it out: while it looks good on paper and is cross platform, I’ve no idea how it works in practice.
From a quick scan of the literature, I might be tempted by that or Amaya https://www.w3.org/Amaya/ , or if opting for a pay-for on the Mac then Coda https://www.panic.com/coda/ or bbedit https://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/ . But again, hard to recommend without the independent hands-on that I’d hoped forum users here might offer …!
