  • Web and Broadcast – progressive or interlaced

    Hi

Am shooting footage that will end up on the web and broadcast – I am using a C100 with the Ninja 2. Should I shoot progressive or interlaced? And which is easier to convert to the other in post?

    Thanks!

You can deinterlace interlaced footage but making progressive into interlaced is harder.
However most broadcasters will take P content as long as its in an I timeline. It depends on what you content is and will it look as good as it can progressive? For the web you have no choice but for broadcast you do.

23.976p and 29.97p can be exported to 29.97i easily. (It’s my television commercial workflow). Broadcasters care less about the look or aesthetic and more about the file specification.

Deinterlacing interlaced footage usually has a price to pay in image clarity as even if you are blending the two fields vs just completely dropping a field, motion starts to get a bit odd.

These days, I don’t know of many shooters outside of broadcasters themselves (and even some of those) who don’t shoot everything progressive and output progressive/interlace as needed.
