  • wear and tear to camera from capturing?

Posted by Jason O’hara on December 1, 2010 at 10:11 pm

My primary camera, NOT the one I usually use for capturing, is due for 2 part replacements: 1. the sub-assembly (which I understand to be the tape mechanism) and 2. the Drum Assembly (containing new tape heads) I have a ton of HDV material to capture and was wondering if I should use this camera to do all the capturing before taking it in for the repairs – essentially running these parts into the ground and saving the wear and tear on the other camera I usually use for capturing.

Am I right to assume these are the main components that would suffer the wear and tear from the capture process or are there others?

    Any advice is appreciated, Thanks

Personally, I wouldn’t take that kind of risk with my tapes if I knew the tape mechanism was on the way out. Also, if I had a ton of HDV tapes, I’d get a cheap HDV deck like the Sony HVR-M15 just for capturing rather than use a camcorder to do it (whether it’s financially efficient rather depends on how many tapes you’ve got but if it’s a lot it probably is).
