Way to go straight to DVD?

Not in an efficient and “useable” (full quality) way.

DV video takes about 13 GB per hour at native compression.

A DVD only holds 4.7 GB.

It would take at least 3 DVD per hour of DV tape. This DVD would NOT be playable on an standard DVD player (it would just be a “data DVD”) but the file(s) on the DVD would retain the full quality and Timecode from the original DV tape).

If you were to copy a DV tape to the computer HD and then have the DVD burning software burn the entire hour to the DVD (so it would play in any DVD player as a video source) you would be further compressing (and cutting the quality) of the DV tape’s footage (as well as losing any Timecode info from the tape).

Don’t know if its even possible to copy from a running DV tape via FireWire to a “recording” data DVD in the internal burner because the continuous data stream at the DV tape playback rate may be too fast for a DVD to burn.

The most efficient way to “store” DV is on a DV tape.
The second-most popular way is to dub from the DV tape to the computer onto an external Hard Drive and then keep the drive.
