Way OT: Burn DVD for set top box

I got asked this by a major corporation in Orlando recently. I was astounded that they did not acknowledge that a USB flash drive, or simple internet connection to watch a training video on line, was a suitable answer. This sounds like a joke, but they “gave in” that VHS distribution was no longer a viable option, and that each restaurant already had the DVD players, and this is what they still wanted (this is 2018 !). So I wound up loading in an older OS, so I could load in DVD Studio Pro.

I agree with Bob! DVD output is a bit of a dodo bird in 2018. FCPX itself still makes (rudimentary) DVDs via the Share export window. Of course, you do need access to a burner. More details here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204820 https://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.2/#/verf3fd3f4b

I had a client that has a similar disposition. In their case it was a work safety training video and work sites might not have any internet access. Given the locations I posited that even DVD player access may not be viable and then I posed the solution. “How many of your employees carry Android or iPhones with them?” The bells rung! Everyone gets their own copy on their devices and carries it with. Immediate access with the ability to check it if they have questions while in the work environment.

No internet access, no flash drive, no discs needed.

I still use DVDSP and Adobe Encore in OS X 10.12.6. Blu-rays still exist as does the occasion DVD. Both work fine here.

I keep an old FCP7 suite with DVDSP just for these kind of jobs, but If it doesn’t need menus, I export a DVD from the timeline in FCPX. We also use Roxio Toast for authoring something that needs rudimentary menus but not all the bells and whistles of DVDSP.

Man, I wish I could still run DVDSP on my home system. It was sweet.
