  • Waveform monitor during capture?

Posted by Aaron Stout on March 11, 2009 at 5:23 pm

I do a lot of live capture via Firewire straight in FCP. (ver. 6.0.5) Often, because of changing light and subjects, I need to know what the vector scopes and waveform monitors show, but I can’t stop capture to look at FCP’s vector scopes. Is there 3rd party add-on or external hardware I can get that would show me the vector scope and waveforms in real-time during capture?

Out of curiousity, why do they go away when you start capture?

    Thanks.

In the Capture Window> Clip setting, you have a button “Video Scope”.
    You can activate while capturing.

There’s hundreds of them. Hardware Scopes have been around probably as long as there has been video production.

Leader, Tektronix and Hamlet are some of the known brands. All you have to do is search Waveform or Vectorscope and you’ll get hundreds of listings in Google or the search engine of your choice. Leader is the brand I would go with if I needed one.

OR, you can pick up the Panasonic or FSI LCD panels that come with scopes built into the displays. FSI even displays them via analog and DVI sources. They have bright yellow banners right here in this forum and Panasonic is panasonic.com go into the Business and Professional section. Look at the flat panel displays.

I cannot activate “Video Scope” while I am capturing. Yes, I know I can bring those up in the capture window, but once I hit “Capture Now” they freeze.

Thanks Walter, I looked at some of those options. I was hoping for an under $500 solution, but I guess I got to do what I got to do. Do you know why FCP can’t display that info while capturing? Thanks!

Nope, sorry. If I had to guess it would be processing. Displaying scopes takes processing power and you really want that dedicated to the video when you’re capturing.

    Hi Aaron,

I have a feeling that Abobe OnLocation has this feature, although I may be mistaken. I’ve not tested it as I’ve never had a good reason to use it, but I vaguely recall a tutorial video on the Adobe site that made use of it.
It comes as part of the CS4 Production Premium package which a lot of people (including yourself perhaps?) have anyway for After Effects, Photoshop etc.
You can download a 30 day trial from Adobe if you wanted to test it.
