  • Waveform display in viewer not showing huge chunks of audio

I have a load of hour long dual mono audio files captured off DAT that I’m syncing to video using clapperboards and the Merge Clips function. Obviously it speeds the process enormously to be able to see the audio peaks visually indicating where the claps are. There seems to be a weird bug to do with the waveform display whereby FCP won’t display audio past a certain point in the file – this is a slightly different point on each channel. My first thought was that FCP had somehow filled up its Waveform Cache but there seems to be no way of specifically increasing this in the settings. There’s plenty of space on the drive with the Waveform Cache folder on it.

I am used to the waveform display in FCP being a bit rubbish – you often seem to needs to scrub back and forth or zoom in and out a bit to get to ‘wake up’ and cache some more waveform but in this case whatever I try it stubbornly refuses to show anymore. I’m guessing this has something to do with the length of the clip I’m working with.

Any ideas or tricks I’m missing? Any help much appreciated.

Use the timecode function to sync the clips.

    Good Luck!

I’ve had success with this issue by toggling the “show audio waveform” button.
