January 8, 2009 at 10:57 pmNicely done advertisement. This will be my upgrade and cross platform as well. There’s just so many places that are FCP and AVID that I have to make the investment. I am not looking forward to yet another thing to get proficient in. I think Vegas is great and much more intuitive to use than some other programs. The tide will change eventually, one user at at time. Thanks for the link Steve.

January 8, 2009 at 11:51 pmI would love for you to be right — the tide will change. But the influence of FCP isn’t a tidal wave, it’s a tsunami. Unless Vegas becomes so overwhelmingly better than FCP, and unless Sony seriously pushes its advertising, FCP will continue to rule.
FCP has almost pushed Avid aside because getting into FCP was relatively “cheap.” FCP itself has become much, much more expensive than it was and now costs about double the price of Vegas. But it still costs a fraction of a full-up, hardware based Avid system. And that’s cheap enough.
It also appeals because it’s Mac based, and so believed to be “better” for graphics than a PC, even though that’s just not true.
If you want to make a living as a video/film editor, you really have to know FCP and preferably also Avid. There are only a tiny number of places that even know of the existence Vegas. How many “Vegas Editor” want ads do you see, anywhere?!
As much as I admire you, and as much as I love cutting with Vegas, I think you guys are whistling in the dark.

January 9, 2009 at 1:17 amYou are quite correct as to what is available concerning employment and platforms. Apple is great at advertising and such. There was a time in the music studio that it was the only game in town, then slowly PC’S gained ground and today are just as prevalent, (more so due to cost) Apple had the niche and as such charged exorbitant costs for it’s products and it cost them greatly. They are no longer the leader in desktop publishing either. About the only hold they have is this last one, and that is slipping. Most mainstream programs are not marketed for MACS and the bundled software with a new machine compared to a PC is a joke. These are tools and if I am the only kid selling hammers then mine are the best right? Not until the guy across the street starts his business and the word gets out and you start losing ground. Eventually the former frey will give way the new. When I was in school we cut film the old fashioned way and the teacher would proudly show how quickly he could do it faster then these new fangled machines. Think that is the case today? Hardly. Mac switched to Intel CPU’S and now has dual boot systems…wonder why??? The average newcomer is not willing to shell out 2 to 3 times the cost for the same tool someone else is selling for half. Systems were built around these platforms and no one is willing to revamp them and the newbies are looking elsewhere to start up their own business. Economics drives the market and everyone including Hollywood is feeling the strain. The end product is what counts not the tools you use. But what you stated is the reality if this is your only employ you need AVID and FCP. I’m glad this is not my main stay. Bottom line is use what works for you and learn what you need to work elsewhere.

January 9, 2009 at 2:58 pmHi Steve
Only 1 thing I can say about that video. Wow! Sony has finally done a great job aiming this at the Pro’s.
I’ve been with Vegas since about 2002 or 2003. Recently I bought a new laptop and went with a MacBook Pro figuring I’d use BootCamp and install XP and my Vegas.
But I had to get final Cut Express because I’m collaborating on a few projets with an FCP editor. I’ve been telling him all about Vegas and this video will confirm all I’ve said. Everything I do in FCe on the MBP has to be rendered. What a time waster!
But I got to tell you; working with both Vegas Pro 8b and FCE 4 There’s things I like and don’t like about both. But more I don’t like in FC. I wish Vegas would do some of the stuff that FC does much faster and easier. I also wish that FC would do a lot that Vegas does easier. Comparing the 2? I’d have to stay with Vegas Pro! Oh yea.
