  • warping a grid in 3d space to create stylized ocean plane?

I am trying to figure out how to achieve a certain effect but i keep hitting deadends.

I have a flat plane that i have applied the Grid effect to, then switched to 3d and rotated the plane to create a horizontal surface.
I want to affect the grid in such a way as to create the feeling of an ocean purely from the wave like distortion on the grid….but this is where i’m hiting the walls…nothing i do is letting me actually warp the grid.!!

I have tried a fractal noise as the source for a displacement map – but the grid is not displacing, i’ve tried the wave world plugin but that just looks wrong.

I guess the problem is that the displacement effect is only 2d and i am trying to displace the z-axis….is this even possible in AE or do i need to go out and buy Maya!!!!
