sounds to me like you’re almost there, although i’m not sure, as the image link you posted is broken. You’re already nesting your beam layer in another comp, for the displacment to work?

Which filter are you using to create the ‘beam’? If it’s Beam, then it’s easy. Keyframing either length or time settings will get it moving.
