If you install the qmaster version that comes with Shake 4.1 over a 5.0.x FCS, it upgrades qmaster to the universal binary version and this is incompatible with Compressor 2.0.x, causing it to crash on launch. The only solutions Apple offers at the moment is to reinstall your entire system disk or ship in your disks for a 5.1 crossgrade (takes about 8 days), neither acceptable if you are in the middle of a project!! So, be warned, do not install Shake 4.1 if you have not already upgraded to FCS 5.1.

That said, does anyone by any chance know how to uninstall qmaster 2.1?

If you’ve already fallen into this trap, please ring Apple support and complain, perhaps we can get some action if this is escalated enough.

I found this out the hard way too. And trashing the newly installed QMASTER and installing the old one didn’t do the trick. The only solution is to either:

    Reformat and reinstall everything (days)
    Install the FCP 5.1 update.

I have two computers, so I just installed the 5.1 update on one and everything works. So I do all my compressing on that machine…until my project ends and I can upgrade everything.

Yes, i let Apple know…but they already knew and suggested the QMASTER reinstall. But it didn’t work for me.
