  • WARNING about Mac Pro and OS 10.4.8

Posted by Mark Maness on October 9, 2006 at 4:05 pm

Just wanted to give a word of warning to all of those wanting to update to OS 10.4.8.

All of us that have downloaded the newest update to OSX has probably seen this already. BUT after installing the update my FCS became very unstable and very difficult to use. Can’t save any long form projects and FCS just crashes at odd times.

All of those who are having lots of problems with long form projects that have been complaining about crashing and gerneral wierdness. I bet you upgraded to OS 10.4.8, didn’t you?

I’m not sure if this is just me BUT I did want to make you all aware there is difficulties with OS 10.4.8 and FCS 5.1.2. Let me say that my Mac Pro has an ATTO FC-41ES card attached to a TerraBlock 12D (6 TB), 2 gig of system memory beacuse of the ATTO card (with 5 gig sitting on a shelf until there is a fix for this) and an ATI X1900 video card. The system is very basic and very little added to it. I do have a G-RAID attached (500 gig work drive and 120 gig system backup).

Thankfully, I backed up my system to an extra 250 gig drive before updating to OS 10.4.8. The backup drive has 10.4.7 installed with FCS 5.1.2 update. And so far everything works fine with this!

I’m happy that it worked for you, Walter. But you know as well as I do, any new system can be completely different from box to box. And this one is so new that we are the ones working out the kinks in them.

Do you have an ATI X1900 installed in yours, Walter?

Really? Where did you order your card from? I had my system built by ProMax and they’ve had them for sometime now.

That may be my issue with OS 10.4.8. That seems to be my only difference with everyone so far. I would suggest that you use Carbon Copy to to clone your boot drive first before installing it.

I’ve got the ATI card in my 3G Dual Core Mac Pro and have not experienced any problems with 10.4.8
At the moment I’m only running with 2G of ram though.

Ram & fibrechannel card on the shopping list

    How did you install 10.4.8?

I’ve frequently seen problems with machines updated by the automatic updater and developed the habit to first download the combo updater, check permissions and then update from the local file. Never had a problem since. We have several machines with 10.4.8 and current FCP running without problems, but no X1900 here.

I guess I’ve been lucky so far. This time I downloaded the entire combo update to 10.4.8, booted to another drive and installed on my manin drive. So far, so good…

I guess you have to expect a little pain when working with a brand new platform and OS. Oh well….

Well, Peter…. I can tell you that at the moment, 2 gig is all you can use for whatever reason. Not sure if its Apple’s problem or a problem with fiber channel card drivers.

I purchased my system with 7 gig of RAM and an ATTO FC-41ES fiber channel card, and it sucks that I can only use 2 gig of it right now. Anyways….. keep your ear to the boards to see when we get over this problem before you purchase and let the RAM sit on a shelf.

It’s ATTO’s problem. They need to fix the driver. As soon as my Mac Pro gets back from repair I’ll actually test it with 4GB. I got a note from a friend who’s running an ATTO fibre card but has 4GB RAM in there and it’s working.
