  • Want to use motion text animation, but LONG render times prohibit?

Posted by Todd Reid on August 7, 2006 at 3:20 pm

I’m created a text animation for a show I’m putting the finishing touches on.
Its a “previously recorded” type of thing.
I have a preset animation then it hold for the remainder of the show (28 minutes).
The render is well over an hour and much too long for my deadlines. I started by importing the project
into FCP, too long. Then I exported a quicktime, same long render.

Any suggestions on how to get a simple motion project to render faster in Final Cut Pro?
I’ve had to bag the idea, and use FCP text, until I can shorten this render fiasco.

Can you not export a movie for the moving bit and then make a freeze in FCP?

I tried that, but the freeze looked a lot different then the .mov, fuzzier (tried the whole -1, 0, 1 thing nothing helped).
I also tried matching the .mov with FCP text.

FCP treats this particular font differently, its much fatter in fcp than motion, even though its the same font, same parameters.

So no matter how simple or complex the motion file is, am I in for long renders?
For complex stuff I can handle it, you’d think two words would go quicker.

You can try exporting the frame you want to hold from Motion as a single frame in a format that supports alpha channel, like PSD or PNG or TIFF. Then import that into FCP and place it over your video track at the hold point, trimming the Motion animation to the frame before. Should be much faster to render.

That’s rarely true once you render the file.

Hit the render button, and stop it after a few seconds, then jog through the newly rendered area of still on the timeline and it will look perfect.

I use Mr. Niles trick all the time, and it works perfectly.

I also have created a text animation template in Motion, and when using the template in FCP, the render time is outrageous. The animation seems simple enough… 6 layers of text that circle around a logo. The render time for a 4:30 video is something like 10 hours of render time! Why does it take so long, and can it be cut down?
