We are currently running Tolis Bru Server 2.0.2 & 2.0.3 software in El Capitan. 488 Tapes backed up over 7 years. System was working fine, but today I can’t consistently communicate with the LTO Tape Library and a new Hardware Scan is throwing me some unclear Sense Error. (never seen this before) Self Diagnostics on the Drive and Library seem to check out.

So my preference is to update the old software (2.0.2 and 2.0.3) to newer ArGest Software which is supported by OWC. I don’t even really need the Server part, just want to run a Tape Library but long ago according to Tolis, converting the server library to the a single user library has to be done a specific way. If any of this makes sense, and you have first hand experience running Bru Server, please contact us. We are willing to pay a competitive hourly consultant rate to help me move on from Bru Server.

    Thanks

OK, the problem itself turns out to be the HH LTO-8 drive itself. (Although the problem is still an annoying Gremlin. Drive passes self diagnostics as does the library, but Bru is spitting an error upon the hardware scan. I still want to transition off of Bru and to ArGest and would love help doing that.

Back in the day (2010-11) I used to work at a place which had Bru Server and a tape library. When the library stopped working, they switched to Bru PE and a single tape drive.

I still have a working Bru system and a compatible LTO-6 and LTO-8 drives to be able to restore the occasional Bru tape.

In your case, since you think the LTO drive may be the issue, if you can borrow another LTO drive and have the necessary interface to connect to it, then you could test and see if it works.

My advice is, if you have a working Bru installation, then don’t bother with Argest. Bru will work just fine for tape restores.

For your 488 Bru tapes, you may want to, in the long run, migrate them to LTFS and LTO-8.

Doug I would caution against Argest backup…support is almost non-existent given that OWC did not hire the technicial support staff from Tolis group.

Neil, I’m curious to know what software you would recommend now for basic LTO archiving from ubuntu.

I don’t have any direct experience archiving in Linux.

I’ve always used MacOS. So, my advice would be to get any Mac even a used one, and use that for archiving. I have a 11″ MacBook Air with 4GB RAM and that’s been used for backing up many LTO tapes, in the field too. Right now I use a Mac mini for LTO work.

@ Neil I would use a mac software if I could get the SMB share speed to my ubuntu fileserver above 100MB/sec. I have 10 gigabit cards on both machines. The zfs pools are capable of ~350MB/sec sustained when transferring within ubuntu and using iperf3 i can achieve 750MB/sec to my mac pro. But when I try using canister or yoyotta the speed yoyos around 90MB/sec.
