  • Want to break up a really long clip into smaller clips in the Browser

Posted by Kevin Camin on October 3, 2012 at 6:09 pm

I’m working with some large 10-30 minute clips that I want to break up into smaller clips that I can rename and make Log notes on.

I’ve started setting in and out points on the master clips and pulling those edits into the Browser window, but the problem is that when I rename that new clip it will rename the master clip and any other clips I’ve pulled out. I understand why it’s doing that, but is there a way to do what I’m trying to do?

    Thanks so much.

    Best regards,

When you find out, please tell me. This used to be cake to do in Discreet Edit, from the bin or the timeline. I have not been able to find a way to do it in FCP7. Probably FCPX can do it, I dunno.

If I’m understanding correctly, when you drag it into your bin choose ‘Make Subclip’, then you can rename and it won’t change the master clip name.

    Thanks, Todd! That works great.

And @Mark, I found when you make it a sub clip, it makes its heads and tails the in and out points that were set. If you need to lengthen the clip you can go to Modify–>Release Subclip Limits.

One thing to consider possibly is to look at Prelude. You can do a ‘partial ingest’ when transcoding. It’s not ideal, but it’s another approach.
