I am trying to make a trail effect for someone who is drawing In air(similar to the disney ID). I am fairly new to after effects so I watched a tutorial online. This is the only video I could find for what I want (https://youtu.be/UKqb4pDUTsQ). I tried what he did but I can only get a dot on the and of the wand I can’t get it to make a line. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Or is there a better/different way to do it?

(Sigh) watching tutorials from 14-year-olds is always going to be a recipe for frustration.

I would bet that you’ve made the typical rookie mistake of not knowing what to attach your track point to. I imagine you’ve applied the tracking data to the Transform properties of the solid layer that your particle effect is on; what you need to do is attach the tracking data to the position of the particle emitter, and NOT the layer transformation properties.
