Walter or anyone else with Kona card & Pany HD monitors — audio sync???

7 Frame? Not common. Most often it is a 2 frame delay…but not to the external monitor. It is in the footage itself. Audio leads the video by 2 frames if you shoot 720p24. That is the nature of DVCPRO HD. You will need to slip the audio on your timeline.

I have seen a 7-8 frame delay only when I captured on my laptop using a PCMCIA firewire card. I captured the same footage on my G5 and got the traditional 2 frame delay.

It’s not a Kona thing, it’s a plasma thing. There is a processing delay that occurs with plasma screens, though it’s getting better.

With 720p material, we run FCP with 0 offset. With 1080i material we run FCP with an offset of 2.

When we got our first plasma screen two years ago, a consumer Vizio model, the delay was more like 5 – 7 frames. From what I’ve seen if you buy a consumer model, the delay is worse than a professional model.

Also, like in the case of our Sony 17″ LCD screen, there is no delay in HD processing, but there IS a 2 frame offset when processing SD.

You need to figure the offset for each individual LCD / Plasma screen as far as I can tell.

Thanks Walter, that tells me where to go… I was just not sure where to make the adjustment. It makes perfect sense to adjust in FCP as that will simply change perception while not really affecting sync anywhere else.

BTW, I now think you are right about Kona products, there does seem to be a difference between Kona and Blackmagic cards that I have to admit, I never really believed until now. One big thing I have noticed in the short time I’ve had my LH card is that Kona audio seems warmer and more natural. That’s determined by one of two factors, 1) decisions made by the engineers that they build into their own onboard Digital to Analog conversion chips, or 2) by buying good pre-manufactured D to A chips that they select for tonal quality. I’m not certain if Kona builds them or buys them, but I like ’em.

funny, i noticed in the cow classifieds your black magic hardware for sale.

I wasn’t planning on defecting yet (multibridge extreme) but If our need for high quality HD up conversion becomes the norm, I’ll have a justification for swapping out the multibridge for a kona 3. heh heh.

It’s what I’ve been saying for a while. AJA is a broadcast centric company and they just build everything to very high standards. You pay more, but for my money, I want good solid broadcast equipment, not the cheapest thing out there.

Congrats are in order… You’ll be very happy that your days of making “videos” are over — you’ll feel really good about making “films” once you see your work on the big screen in your edit bay. I know “film” implies the stuff of sprocket holes and laboratories, but, as someone who used to work in feature film, I think editing material on a big plasma display makes the whole affair much more “movie-like.” I’m gonna have a lot more fun at work I think and I think my clients will absolutely love it too. Now all I need is the first bi HD job and I’ll really be happy.

As far as the sync issue goes, I just got done sorting that out to the best of my ability. After much trial and tribulation, it seems to me that adjusting System Settings — Playback Control — Frame Offset to “5” is what appears to be syncronous on my system. That may not be perfect for everyone, but for me it sure looks like its tight sync. Of course, the FCP canvas does not appear to be in sync now, but, I don’t think that will have much impact for me.
