I have some footage of myslef against a greenscreen, walking towards the camera, and a still image of the wall of my house, facing directly towards the camera. I have created a quick opacity boost and added a ripple to the wall, but it still looks awful. Any tips on how to acheive the look whereby some parts of my body come through earlier than others, without using masks?

    Yours gratefully, Ben Tattersley

The easiest way I can think of is an animated mask. draw a mask around the foremost parts of your body then set a keyframe and a few frames latter increase the area within the mask. it’s a little complex to explain, but it is pretty easy to achieve.

The only good way I have been able to achieve this effect with accuracy is through rotoscoping… which means it will not be easy.

Of course like any rotoscoping… it is best you do not have moving legs included in the screen if you do not want to make a difficult process more difficult… or, you could just use MOCHA (…not MOCHA plug-in for AE) for rotoscoping and most of your rotoscoping problems have been solved.

Much appreciated then, i tried this method, then added a matte choker, duplicating it and finally adding a stroke on the centre parts and using that as a displacement matte (putting a neutral gray backgorund at 50% Opacity on top beforehand) for the wall layer.
