Wacom Tablets
Posted by Peter Williams on August 31, 2009 at 10:59 amI am looking to purchase a Wacom Tablet as an alternative to a computer mouse, as I have lately been suffering a touch of RSI, which I can’t seem to shift. I have been looking at the Bamboo and Intuos ranges, but I am a little in the dark about it all, so I would very much appreciate any advice on the matter. I am an offline Avid/FCP Editor, and I don’t really get involved with graphics/effects beyond a rudimentary level, so I probably don’t need anything high-end. I tend to alternate between Mac and PC-based systems, with the usual dual monitor setup.
Best Wishes
Peter

August 31, 2009 at 12:30 pmIntuos is a much better tablet line. Bamboo is more of a consumer, let’s play with our photographs type of line and doesn’t seem to hold up well for day to day editing / compositing work. Also, the Intuos has many more levels of pressure than the Bamboo, which is really nice for Photoshop work.
Been using the Wacom tablets since. about ’97 and hate working without them. We have three of the Intuos 3 tablets here now, though I will be ordering three of the new Intuos 4’s shortly.

August 31, 2009 at 3:50 pmI’m partial to the 6×11 now. Good size to work with two displays.

August 31, 2009 at 3:53 pmWell I’m not Walter, but I’ve used Wacoms for almost 10 years now. Love them to death, and it’s really helped out with my wrist tendonitis.
Right now I’ve got the 6×4 and the 12×8 in action. Most of the time, the 6×4 is fine for video editing, some keyframing in AFX, etc. The only time I really need to use the 12×8 is when I get started doing some heavy Photoshop action with touchups, or making b-roll out of next to nothing (hah). They all work really well over 2 monitor screens as well.

August 31, 2009 at 4:28 pmI too have the Intuos 6×11 and its THE best in my opinion for dual monitor editing, animation, matte painting, etc
One very helpful tip is to go into the mapping settings and decrease the area needed to go all the way up and down and left to right – especially when you have dual monitors – just shrink down the size of the rectangle.
The next tip i recommend is with the newest mac keyboards to just put it actually on the top part of the Wacom tablet and have the mapping flush right to the bottom of where the keyboard ends so you can still scroll to the top of your monitors – this way you can type more easily and still have the wacom easily accessible.
If you have an older mac keyboard just put it above the wacom in front of it so its still easily accessible. A lot of guys use this method of mapping the size down and putting then new MAC keyboard on top of the tablet itself.
cheers
Sean

I used to have the keyboard directly above the tablet, but now we run the tablet off to the right. So I always have my left hand on the keyboard and my right hand drives the tablet. It has worked really well for us. You can see the layout on our website in the Facility Tour, both Wally World and JungleLand have this layout.

August 31, 2009 at 4:38 pmI cannot use a mouse anymore – after Wacom it’s like riding a bike with a bent wheel!
give yourself at least a week of frustration. Some people take better to Wacom than others. It does require some getting accustomed to.

August 31, 2009 at 10:50 pmI might be wrong, but the Wacom Tablets don’t seem to be very widely used in the UK (at least in the world of editing), so I very much appreciate the advice that has been offered.
Many Thanks
