Wacom Intuos setup/workflow?
Posted by Brian Rock on September 25, 2008 at 11:30 amI have read previously on the forums that people have used Wacom tablets to edit with on FCP. I was interested about exactly how these are set up to edit with and how any specific action compares to using a mouse to do the same thing.
Does it speed up the workflow, or just improve ergonomics?

September 25, 2008 at 11:36 amI’ve been using a tablet since about 1997 and can’t edit any other way.
It’s faster once you get used to the tablet because the tablet is the complete work surface of your screens. so when you put the pen down on the upper left corner of the tablet, your pointer is instantly there, there’s no drag the pointer to that corner of the screen. This is really fast when you have two monitors with a lot of workspace.
For masking and painting in Photoshop or After Effects, there’s no better tool.
Absolutely zero carpal tunnel issues or even wrist pain issues.
The buttons on the pen itself and the tablet can be mapped to any function you wish.

September 25, 2008 at 1:47 pmWalter: would you use your tablet in COLOR? I am wondering if that allows for more finesse with precision adjustments.

It’s all I use for everything, including Color.

September 25, 2008 at 8:05 pmI keep my setup fairly simple for FCP. The tip is single-click. The lower button on the index rocker is ctrl-click (for contextual menus) and the upper double-click. I find that works best for me…
In Color it’s much the same only I have the upper rocker configured for value changes – so I can click on a numeric field, hold down the upper button and slide right or left to increment or decrement the value.
For PS3 it’s the same as FCP with the eraser active.
I don’t tend to use the buttons but that’s just me – one day I’ll see someone elses setup and think ‘Why didn’t I use my buttons like that?’ Till then I’ll just muddle through! I also keep it simple because not every place I cut likes installing the Wacom software, so if I relied too much on a fancy setup I’d be stuffed without it…
You’ll need to run with it for a while before you find your optimal setup.

October 20, 2009 at 4:24 pmI’m using an Intuos3 and find that the tip is contently double clicking instead of single clicking when I’m trying to select. Doesn’t really matter what the program, but I was wondering if you made any adjustments to the default set up of the tablet? I’ve replaced the tip and tried various settings on the tablet to no avail. I love my tablet as I’ve moved from the Smoke world to Mac/FCP and would love to get my interactivity back.
