  • “VTR Problems” – help? BMDLHD Extreme, Final Cut

    Hello!

Having a bit of a problem with our brand spankin new Black Magic Decklink HD Extreme card in our new dual quad Mac running Leopard. 6 gigs of ram, 1.4 ter hd in case you needed that, but anyways…

I’m getting this error message when trying to capture using our Panasonic DVCPro deck:
“Tape trouble. Check VTR. DO not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first.” Well, checked the works of it on our old editing system, it’s fine. I’m currently unable to capture entire clips, and I need to… really bad. So what gives?

The only info I could find in the recesses of the Cow was concerning AJA cards:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/150/847522#847522

Their solution was to email for a codec, as indicated.

I’m capturing DVCPro footage at 29.97. Device control is Blackmagic NTSC 29.97. Capture/Input is Blackmagic NTSC DV. Working under version 6.4, because the latest (6.6something) won’t allow for video preview, which is another lovely problem, but if I can capture at 6.4, whatever, ya know? I got the tip to go to 6.4 on the Cow yesterday somewhere, from a post from a really sarcastic yet helpful fellow who was having communication issues as well.

I’d really like to know what gives so I can edit tomorrow. I hope this thread helps others. : ) Thanks!!!

Try installing the plug-in found at https://dummy1.hil.no/ as described.

Trash preferences in Final Cut after you are done.

Also make sure to check the Blackmagic Device Control settings and make sure it’s set to RS-422 Panasonic, not Sony,

I suspect this is due to a problem with Final Cut misenterpreting the RS-422, and thinking it get’s an error message from the deck. I’ve had similar problems with panasonic decks for some years now. The plug-in above will disable this deck polling function in the RS-422 protocol.

Hope this is the source of your problems.

    Best,

    Geir

Thank you so much, Geir, this seems to have done the trick.

I really hope you Black Magic folk out there are listening, and plan to include something like this next update! Because otherwise it seems to be a pretty fun card.

Oh yes, and btw, I could not find a setting in FCP’s Black Magic prefs to discern between a sony vs a panasonic deck, but it worked, so I’m not complaining. Completely the RS422 thing.

    Hi Benjamin,

The Sony / Panasonic preferences are located in Final Cut Pro’s device control presets as it is Final Cut Pro that handles the interpretation of data from the VTR and back, we merely provide the serial port interface.

    Kristian,

I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong/not looking where I should’ve been : ). Under the Black Magic preset for 29.97, it was indeed set for a sony rs422 protocol. I’m working on getting our other machine going, so I’ll see if the patch that made this machine work, without messing with the preset, is necessary or not.

    Thanks,

    -Benjamin
