I’m having trouble capturing logging and capturing footage on a computer at my office. We use iMacs with FCP 5, and device control and capturing works fine on every single computer, except for our brand new one. When I plug the camera in through firewire, it says VTR OK for a second or two, and I am able to control the camera through FCP briefly, but then it goes out and says no communication. Device control is set to firewire DV, capture is set to DV NTSC. Like I mentioned before, I have not had any problems with any of the other computers. It is a DVCAM tape, and we are using a Panasonic VQL0949. Any ideas on why it may not be working?

Are you saying that this exact same camera is being used without problem on the other machines or that the other machines just don’t seem to have any problems, sort of?

There’s a big difference in how we’d suggest you debug this.

The same camera works fine with all the other computers.

Please give the exact versions of the software, OS and QuickTime you’re using. Are any other devices connected to the computer? What settings are on the media you’re capturing? I cannot find any information at all on the net on a device called a Panasonic VQL0949. What is it?

    All the best,

A few things you must determine:
Is the new machine’s FW port good?
Is the cable in use good?
What’s different between the other machines and this one? MacOS? QT?

For the FW comm to start out okay and then drop off implies an OS issue or a hardware issue. Can you capture into iMovie? Do you have a FW card you can drop into the new machine? Did you say it was an iMac?

Alright, I think we figured it out. Thanks for all the responses. The FW400 port works fine, so that isn’t the issue. I think it lies with Leopard OS and the camera. It is somewhat of an older camera, and I think we need new drivers for Leopard to recognize it. I’m going to try and get in touch with Panasonic to see if they can help me out at all. Thanks again for the posts!
