  • VST folder – where?

Posted by Bob Moyer on December 29, 2013 at 11:33 pm

I downloaded a couple of audio VSTs, now I have no idea of where they are supposed to go. I am using Win7/64 and VegasPro 10 (64 & 32). I cannot find a VST folder anywhere. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

    Bob

EDIT: Never mind, I realized that I had not pointed Vegas to the VST folder.

Actually, you should not have to do this if you crate the VST folder in the right place.

    64-bit VST’s should be underC:\Program Files\VSTplugins\
    32-bit VST’s should be underC:\Program Files (x86)\VSTplugins\

Thanks, John, for the response. These are the first VSTs on my system and the folder didn’t exist (until I made it). I had been searching all over “C” drive and couldn’t find it because it wasn’t there.

Yes, unfortunately the is no folder until you make it and VST developers seem quite happy not writing installers and expecting their customers to know what to do. 🙁

    Glad you figured it out.

Some of them installs into a default Steinberg folder.

Yes, but actually, the default is whatever is in the registry hive:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VST\VSTPluginsPathYou are correct that some programs establish this as:C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VstPluginsbut if you don’t own any Steinberg software, the default should be:C:\Program Files\VstPluginsThe problem is that many of the VST installers ignore this registry entry and many more VST’s don’t even have installers. The whole Steinberg VST thing is a mess. Then you add 64bit vs 32bit on top of that and it’s even more of a mess. 🙁
