This should be easy. I looked at VST effects. There was a lot about VST effects but could not find what a VST effect was. Please enlighten me. I might want to use one some day if I knew what it was. At the same time tell me how to reduce the volume on one audio track when dubbing sound on another audio track. Then of course I’d want to bring up the sound again. Maybe Sony does it a better way. Thanks

VST is just a wrapper for an audio effect, like direct-x effects. I’ve seen VST wrapper software that makes non VST plugins VST. VST I believe was started with Steinbergs Cubase, Nuendo, etc,,,. Most Windows based NLEs will work with VST and direct x plugins.

Just to expand on Danny’s explanation. VST (Virtual Studio Technology) is an API (Application Programming Interface) for audio plug-ins created by Steinberg. Microsoft created their own API which is part of DirectX. So you will here they terms DirectX plug-ins and VST plug-ins. Long ago, software usually supported one or the other so you had to be careful which plug-ins you bought to ensure that they supported your host application. Sony Vegas supports both API’s so there is no need to worry about which to buy.

By default, Vegas does not come with any VST plug-ins but there are a lot of free VST plug-ins (some of which are quite good) that you can download from the Internet. Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series (Chorus, Compressor, Delay, EQ, Flanger, Phaser, Limiter, Reverb) are very good. Also Voxengo has some great VST effects both for free and for a fee.
