VRT…..HELP!!!!!
Dear Forum,
I find myself in a terrible situation with a deadline around the corner. The problem:
I’m trying to log and capture from a jvc dv camera unto a powerbook running fcp 4. I have no timecode printed on the film and hence proceeded, like I have before, to just press capture now. However, the screen goes black and app. 5 minutes later, a message pops up: “waiting for timecode- device must be in VTR mode when device control is enabled.” Fair enough, I switched off device control, uncontrollable device, yet the very same message arrives once again. I have read about some firewire bugs etc. with JVC, so I have also tried this out with several other cameras. Same deal. What gives? Please, anyone, throw me a rope, I have a deadline very soon and am getting desperate. Thanking you all in advance.

btw…tibook 1 ghz, 1 gb ram…not a lot, but i have successfully used this configuration many a times before. thank you all.

Was this tape RECORDED on this same JVC camcorder that you’re trying to use to capture from?
Regardless,1. Borrow, rent, or buy used, ANY (properly-working) Sony or Panasonic DV camcorder (a “home video” camcorder is fine).
2. Try playing your tape in this other camcorder (There should be running TC on the tape, its part of the recording format).
3. But, if there is still NOT running TC on the tape, connect two camcorders together via FireWire and make a complete COPY of the original tape over to a NEW DV tape in the other camcorder. (The copy will have no generation loss and it WILL have TC.)
4. Capture to FCP via the Sony or Panasonic camcorder from the new copy of the tape.
