    Hey everyone,

I have been producing five minute video home tours in HDV for the last few weeks. I’m using Brightcove to host and play the videos and that is of course, an all flash infrastructure.

My current way of getting the video from FCP to Brightcove is this:

    1. Export through compressor using Sorenson 3 QT codec

    2. Convert the new QT version to Flash using Flash 8 Video Encoder (in Adobe Flash Professional) using VP6 codec

    3. Uploading to Brightcove, and imbedding the player on my site.

My question is, is there a way to eliminate some steps here? Do I have to go to QT format first? It seems to be that all Flash 8 Encoder will accept is QT movies. I have Squeeze v 4.0 so it doesn’t have the VP6 codec on board….

I’d love to be able to just go from FCP format to flash format some how, some way.

Do my extra steps lead to any quality deterioration?

As always, thanks so much for any help you guys can provide.

You can buy the ON2VP6 codec (plug-in), Flix, directly from ON2 and install it as a FCP plug-in for direct export.

As Ed says, you could buy Flix Exporter, or you could simply export a QT reference file from FCP and use that in Flash to encode to Flash Video. Exporting to Sorenson 3 first absolutely puts a big (and extra) compresssion hit on your video.

BTW, you should be sure to get yoiurself a copy of Aharon Rabinowitz’s great new DVD on this very subject. Aharon will show you how to get the best product possible on the web for everyone to see. Check his DVD out at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/rabinowitz_aharon/ITKVS.php

Thank you so much guys. I’m going to try the reference file way first. I hate to buy a plugin if I already have the compressor on my computer. This method should definitely help.

    Actually, one more question…..

At what point in that process can I deinterlace it? Flash 8 Encoder doesn’t seem to have a deinterlace option…

David’s right about exporting a reference file, that’s what we do because we don’t have Flix exporter. But you did ask how to reduce your steps and the plug-in does that. Having said that, exporting a ref file is much quicker the extra compression step you’ve been taking, which gives you a big quality hit and takes a long time.
As for de-interlacing, FCP’s isn’t very good. Nattress has a good one (Yes. it’s a plug-in that you have to buy!)

If you don’t use that within FCP before exporting, you can use After Effects (which is pretty good), but you’re adding more time-consuming steps. You might want to do a test though,
the lesser quality FCP built-in de-interlacer may work just fine for your purpose.

This is one reason Adobe Flash is not really a great Flash video encoder. Its designed to do many things, and encoding Flash video is unfortunately not the thing it does best. And, instead of exporting a reference file, now you’re back to Compressor again.

I use Flix Pro myself, it has a good deinterlacer and great compresion engine too. So, I export either a self conatined or reference QT and then encode to Flash with deinterlacing. Flix Pro is $249, buts I think its well worth the price.

    Seth,

Keep in mind that while Flix Exporter is cool because it works from inside FCP and Compressor, Flix Pro is cool because its a more complete standalone app and because it can embed skins and player controls into your Flash videos. If you ge Flix Pro I’ll be happy to help you configure it so that you don’t have to work your way through the learning curve.

Squeeze 4.5 comes with VP6, does the interlacing and will allow you to adjust your levels for web all in one place! Works great for us! Since you own Squeeze 4 it is either a free upgrade or very small fee.
