VP6 Codec for Flash Video Questions
I’m thinking about buying the VP6 codec for Flash, but am wondering about the viewer experience. Does it require the Flash Player 7 (or will it play in 6), and is it necessary for the viewer to download a decoder to view the video? If so how seamless is this process? We encode mostly corporate/marketing content, and do not want to make the audience jump through any hoops. Also, will I need to upgrade to Flash 8 (I currently use Flash 7) in order to work with flv’s encoded with the VP6 codec (I already have Squeeze 4.2 for the encoding)?

I believe that the VP6 codec in Flash requires Flash Player 8 for client playback and Flash 8 for authoring with. Once you buy the codec, you can use it in Squeeze 4.2 to encode and use as an asset in Flash 8. As far as client’s being able to update, the installation for upgrading to Player 8 is very quick and rather painless. Although, I do not recall whether or not the browser must be restarted after installation for the player to work in a webpage.
