Volume
I’m using Vegas for audio editing, and I’m trying to even out volume between different recorded units. I know how to decrease volume of a segment (an event, I guess they call it) by pulling down the gain line at the top of the event. I’ve even figured out how to lower the volume more than the gain line will allow (lower the volume, save it, open it, lower the volume again) but how do I raise the volume? How do I make an event louder?

If you have an audio editor you can open the audio clip in the editor, amplify it, and copy it back into Vegas. I use a free audio editor called Wavepad which you should be able to download. In Vegas you have the option to make this your Audio editor and then you highlight the audio clip and with a right click you can open it in Wavepad. Hope this helps.

Alex — thanks. Fooling around with trying to find a solution to this problem, I tried the same thing in Goldwave, and it seemed to work. Would Wavepad be better, or are they all pretty much the same?

Have you tried using a Volume Envelope? It can both raise AND lower volumes and will work dynamically instead of affecting the entire envent.
Or using the volume slider on the track header? This can also raise and lower volume but will do so over the entire track.
There’s also the “normalize” option but that simply takes the loudest point in a clip and adjusts the volume based on that point. It will typically raise the volume, though.
There’s no reason to go to an external program in order to raise the volume.

I tried the slider, and at first I didn’t think it was working, because it didn’t change the physical appearance of the event — the graph-lines didn’t get bigger. Then I played it back, and realized it was working, but as you say, it changed the whole event, so I had to move the part I wanted to change to a new line.
I don’t know what a Volume Envelope is. Can you explain more?

Volume envelopes arebonly available in the full Pro version. If that is what you have go to insert envelope audio volume. Then there will be a line in the event that you can add nodes to and adjust different areas to different volumes.

I am a bit puzzled by the last posting as I have an audio envelope in Movie Studio which can change the volume in a clip, although it cannot increase it beyond the original maximum. But if the whole line volume can be raised this audio envelope can be used to adjust each clip. I also realise that you can get certain audio effects by right clicking on the audio clip and selecting “Apply non-real-time-events FX” and then selecting Volume. On the other hand, what is an amateur like me doing giving advice ! Stick with the experts Tad.

Alex, if you’re talking about moving the mouse to the top of the even and dragging downward, that’s NOT an envelope. That’s simply a means of lowering the volume for the entire event. But it’s not an envelope. Use the Volume Envelope (in the versions that have it) and you’ll understand.
But… the bottom line is that ALL versions of Vegas *CAN* increase the volume. Some versions just have more options than others.

I do use the volume envelope with the little patches to move it up and down within events or groups thereof, especially when I am combining ambient sound or voice-over with music. The confusion arose over the terms Audio envelope and Volume envelope, which are the same thing. (plus panning of course.)

This is all fascinating, and it’s teaching me a lot, and I appreciate all the responses. But I need a primer on envelopes and what they do and how to use them.

Tad, the online help menu (search on envelope) built into Vegas is very good at explaining things.
